Research into the Physical and Mental Wellbeng of Hip Hop Theatre

In 2019, I received a grant from Arts Council England to conduct a 7 month research into the wellbeing of Hip Hop Theatre. This involved working with 5 companies (UK & international) as as well as working with One Dance UK’s Eirinn Sanchez and Nefeli Tsiouti founder of Project Breakalign. The participating companies included the UK’s Far From the Norm, Boy Blue Entertainment, Southpaw Dance Co., Ella Mesma Company and Holland’s b-boy theatre and battling crew, The Rugged’s.

The research involved, observing, interviewing and spending time with these companies and artists to understand how they work and to understand how new artists can adapt and prepare for professional work. It also allowed me to see first hand, how and where Hip Hop Theatre artists are supported by funding bodies, theatres and studio spaces.

Below you’ll find two recap videos capturing some of the wonderful insights into each company. I am so keen to share this work, to help support and improve not only the Hip Hop theatre sector but all dance artists and makers, working with freelance artists. Iwould be great to keep these conversations happening, they need to be had, if you want to discuss these topics or anything else relating to the research, please get in contact.
